Video projection
78 x 78”

“There’s something really primal about projection art, it’s that idea that we gather in these dark spaces...” — Artist Jacob Tolo, 2016 Gertrude St Projection Festival.

To-gather is a 2-minute long video projection work. In this project, I expanded on the statement above and thought about projection as a method of gathering people and as an activity where people come together in the dark to observe quietly. I aimed to create a temporary yet strong connection between the viewers and form a highly self-aware group solely through text and light.

The orientations of the text in the red circular light guide the participants around the space as individuals or a unity, while the words promote a self-reflection of the participants’ current situation by describing the participants as either individuals or as a group. By reading and moving together, the participants gain a heightened self-awareness of their relationship with each other at present.
